When to Start Shopping for Baby: A Realistic Timeline from One Mom to Another
Hey there, mama-to-be!
First things first—huge congratulations! Whether you’re still getting used to the idea of being pregnant or already knee-deep in stroller research, just know: you’ve got time. And no—you don’t have to buy all the things in one panicked shopping spree.
When I was pregnant with my now 4-year-old, I was convinced I needed every baby gadget under the sun before my third trimester. Spoiler alert: I didn’t. But I also learned that there are definitely some things worth planning ahead for—especially baby gear.
So let’s keep this fun and stress-free. Here’s a realistic timeline of what to buy (and when!) so you can feel prepared instead of overwhelmed. Plus, a few honest mom tips from someone who’s been there—and who might still have a soft spot for baby gear shopping.
This is when most moms start shopping—and for good reason. You’re likely feeling more human, your bump’s starting to show, and baby gear doesn’t look quite so intimidating.
First Trimester (Weeks 1–12)
👉 Focus on you first, mama!
This is your time to rest, snack, and grow a tiny human. No need to start buying the entire baby aisle just yet. But you might want to:
-
Start a private baby registry. Even if you’re not ready to share it yet, it’s a great place to save items you’re researching.
-
Think about childcare. I know it sounds early, but if you’ll need daycare after maternity leave, start researching now. In our area, daycares fill up FAST, and waitlists can be months—or even a year—long.
-
Consider investing in a pregnancy pillow. If sleep starts getting uncomfortable (hello, sore hips and back!), treat yourself to our Chill Mama Pregnancy Pillow. It’s a lifesaver for getting comfy as your bump grows.
Second Trimester (Weeks 13–27)
👉 Welcome to the “golden” trimester (hopefully)!
This is when most moms start shopping—and for good reason. You (hopefully) feel more like yourself, your bump is bumping, and baby gear starts making sense instead of looking like spaceship parts.
Big Essentials to Focus On:
-

-
Crib or Bassinet – Safety first, always!
-
Dresser/Storage & Changing Pad – You’ll need somewhere to stash all those adorable onesies and diaper supplies, but no need to go overboard here.
Everyday Basics:
-
A few onesies and sleepers (in newborn and 0-3M sizes)
-
Swaddles
-
Bottles & pacifiers (just grab a few to test at first)
-
Maternity clothes – trust me, leggings and stretchy dresses are lifesavers.
Baby Shower Planning:
This is the perfect time to:
-
Decide who’s hosting your shower.
-
Pick a date (usually between 28-34 weeks).
-
Choose a venue—someone’s home, a park, or a cute event space.
And of course—you’ll want a gorgeous dress for the big day! Check out our collection of stunning Maternity Dresses at Mom and Me. They’re bump-friendly, comfy, and perfect for those precious shower photos you’ll look back on forever.
Third Trimester (Weeks 28–40-ish)
👉 It’s nesting season, baby!
This is when the urge to reorganize every closet hits—and it’s also time to make sure you’re fully prepped for baby’s arrival.
Gear Must-Dos:
-
Have your travel system delivered and your car seat installed by Week 36! Hospitals won’t let you leave without it properly secured. Pro tip: practice buckling in a stuffed animal first—it’s oddly helpful!
-
Wash baby’s clothes, blankets, and sheets.
-
Pack your hospital bag.
-
Set up your nursery or baby’s corner of your room.
-
Stock up on diapers, wipes, and diaper cream.
-
Gather feeding supplies: nursing bras, bottles, burp cloths, formula if needed.
-
Have baby health basics on hand: thermometer, nail clippers, gentle soap/lotion.
Choosing Your High Chair:
Even though you won’t use a high chair right away, the third trimester is a great time to pick one—especially if you’d like to add it to your registry. Consider:
-
Sleek & Stylish: The NUNA Bryn High Chair looks like modern art in your kitchen and blends beautifully with your décor.
-
Modern & Functional: The UPPAbaby Ciro High Chair is contemporary, easy to clean, and comfortable for baby.
- Portable & On-The-Go: The Perch Hook-On High Chair is perfect for travel, dining out, or saving space at home.
-
Thinking Ahead: A Toddler Tower is fabulous for later toddler days, helping your little one safely reach the kitchen counter—but you won’t need it quite yet.

A Few Things You Can Totally Wait On:
-
Fancy gadgets like baby food makers
-
Tons of toys (newborns mostly want you!)
From One Mom to Another…
Here’s what I wish someone had told me: you don’t have to have everything figured out before baby arrives. Babies truly need less than you’d think at first—a safe place to sleep, a way home from the hospital, diapers, and YOU.
Everything else can come in time. And if you’re feeling overwhelmed? Pop into Mom and Me. We love helping moms pick the perfect stroller, choose a beautiful baby shower dress, or just reassure you that yes—you’re doing amazing.
Take a breath, mama. You’ve got this. And we’ve got you. 💕
